Why Counselling?
Do you feel stuck in a rut? Many people encounter a problem at some point in their life. If you have a problem, you don't have to go through it alone. Sometimes, just talking about it with someone you can trust may help. Counselling is focus based and can be short term to help with specific issues in the present, such as stress and work issues. I offer a confidential counselling service where you can talk through your thoughts and feelings and explore your options. We would work together to support you to find a solution and evaluate your choices. Outcome expected: solving the problem.
Why Psychotherapy?
Have you ever wondered why are the way you are? If you have deep seated issues then they may take longer to resolve. In which case psychotherapy may be the answer. Pyschotherapy can be longer term and open ended to help a person understand why they feel, think and behave the way they do. I offer a supervised psychotherapy service where together we would aim to understand your sense of self aand your repeated patterns of feeling, thinking and behaviour. For example, some people may ask themselves why they always end up in destructive relationships. Our aim would be to broaden your awareness of self and others and transform your negative patterns into positive ones. Outcome expected: growth and self-development leading to a more productive and fulfilling life.
What am I offering? A confidential and non-judgemental private counselling and psychotherapy service in central Glasgow and Houston, West Renfrewshire. I work with indviduals, couples and small groups all on a face to face basis. I also offer telephone counselling to individuals who would prefer structured counselling over the telephone.
My experience and qualifications
I have a Diploma in Transactional Analysis Counselling awarded by Metanoia Institute in West London. I have completed my formal training for a Masters degree in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy and I am currently preparing for my examination to become a Certified Transactional Analyst. My main experience is working psychotherapeutically with individuals. More recently I have developed my service by counselling couples and I have worked as a group facilitator for Triumph Over Phobia supporting people suffering from phobias, OCD and other anxiety disorders.
My Approach
I use a Humanistic approach to counselling and psychotherapy, specifically Transactional Analysis (TA). TA is an integrative approach built on the premise that we are all born OK and that our environment shapes us. Eric Berne, a renowned psychiatrist and founder of TA, believed that we have the capacity and to think and therefore make decisions to change if we want to. His theory was that our personality is made up of three ego states: Parent, Adult, and Child.
Parent - this represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours we have internalised from our parents/carers.
Adult - this represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours used to rationalise the here and now reality based on information we are receiving.
Child - this represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours stemming from our past experiences which return to us in the present, usually we're unaware of this.
Another element of TA theory is at an early age we decide upon an unconscious life plan called a script which is influenced by our upbringing. Sometimes our script can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle, like the repeating of destructive behaviour. Therapy aims to help the person to leave their script through self-awareness to enable them to make healthier choices. TA can also examine a person external world as well as their internal one by observing their social interactions. It is worth noting that many of the world's large and successful use TA in their staff development programmes.
